About This Program

The Guaranteed Income Supplement provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to Old Age Security pension recipients who have a low income and are living in Canada. The amount depends on your marital status and income. Single, divorced, or widowed pensioners can receive a higher maximum amount than those with a spouse or common-law partner. GIS must be renewed annually, and eligibility is reassessed based on the previous year's income tax return.

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for this program, you generally need to meet all of the following requirements:

  • You must be 65 years of age or older
  • Your citizenship status must be one of: Canadian citizen, permanent resident
  • You must have filed your most recent tax return

Income testing

GIS is reduced by $1 for every $2 of income above the exemption. Full GIS for single seniors with annual income (excluding OAS) under approximately $21,624. Employment income has a $5,000 full exemption plus 50% exemption on the next $10,000.

Reduced maximum for those with a spouse or common-law partner

Maximum GIS is lower when your spouse/partner also receives OAS/GIS
