About This Program

The Old Age Security pension is a monthly payment available to seniors aged 65 and older who meet Canadian legal status and residence requirements. You do not need to have worked or contributed to OAS to be eligible. The amount you receive depends on how long you have lived in Canada after age 18. A full OAS pension requires 40 years of Canadian residence; a partial pension is available with at least 10 years. Benefits increase by 10% automatically when you turn 75.

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for this program, you generally need to meet all of the following requirements:

  • You must be 65 years of age or older
  • Your years of Canadian residency (since age 18) must be 10 or more
  • Your citizenship status must be one of: Canadian citizen, permanent resident

Income testing

OAS recovery tax: 15 cents of every dollar of net income above $90,997 is clawed back. Full OAS is eliminated at approximately $148,065 income.

Partial OAS for less than 40 years of Canadian residence

1/40th of full pension for each complete year of residence in Canada after age 18

10% increase at age 75 and over

OAS pension automatically increases by 10% when you turn 75
